Due to the nature of my work I cannot offer future midwives or college students any work experience at the moment. I suggest you contact your local NHS Trusts - many of them do work experience weeks, where you rotate through the different sections of the maternity department - medical records, wards and community - just to get a taster. Also, consider voluntary work - maybe with a children's centre, a breast feeding support group or one of the many charitable groups, such as postnatal depression support groups.
Also READ, READ, READ, the art of story telling is alive and thriving in midwifery. Not just 'Call the Midwife', but books such as 'The Baby's Coming' which is an account of modern day midwifery and it's challenges (and a best seller at Amazon!!).
You might consider joining IMUK (Independent Midwives UK) - an organisation which supports the skills of midwives who choose to work outside the NHS. Qualified midwives and third year student midwives might want to attend the 'Make the Move' study day: these are often advertised on IMUK website or our Facebook page. These invaluable study days offer an insight into the world of self-employment, explaining how to set up in business, stockists, equipment needed, marketing tips and lots of fellowship!!!!! FIND YOUR TRIBE!
